Book Description
Introduction

On the eve of the birth centenary celebration of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad it is highly creditable on the part of the K. P. Jayaswal Research Institute to publish a memorial volume on him covering his life and times. Fifteen scholars have contributed papers to the volume on different aspects of his life and times. It is a rich tribute paid to the memory of the Maulana. It depicts the various facets of his life. His multidimensional personality has been highlighted. His valuable contributions to literature, journalism, theology, oratory and Indian politics have been focussed.

Maulana Abul Kalam Azad was born in the holy city of Makkah on Wednesday, the 14th of Zilhijji 1305 A. H./August 22, 1888. He came from a family of Muslim divines and mystics, who came to India from Herat in the reign of Babar and flourished during the Mughal period. About the time of the Indian revolt of 1857 his father Maulana Khairuddin migrated from India to Makkah, where he married an Arab lady and to them Abul Kalam was born there. His father was a distinguished theolgian, religious scholar and author well known both in India and West Asia. As well known for his love of books and academic pursuits, he had a special place in the social and intellectual sphere of the Islamic World. Thus, in the shaping of Abul Kalam's mind his family background played an impor tant role. He acquired fundamental values from his forefathers such as erudition, truthfulness, courage to fight against unjust and un-Islamic forces and to challenge the political authority of the time. He spent early years of his life till the age of ten in Makkah.
