About the Author

Long before going to India for the first time in 1977, Uma Lacombe enjoyed listening to Indian classical music. In India, after living in ashrams where she practiced Bhakti yoga, Hatha yoga and meditation, Uma Lacombe spent two years in a Tibetan village (Mcleodganj, Himachal Pradesh, India) where she learnt the basis of Chinese medicine and astrology.

By the end of 1980 Uma began learning Dhrupad vocal from Pt. Ritwik Sanyal. In 1981 she met Ustad Zia Mohiuddin Dagar for the first time and studied under his guidance from 1982 until his death in 1990. At the same time Uma learnt from Ustad Zia Fariduddin Dagar, Zia Mohiuddin's brother.

Uma Lacombe gives Dhrupad workshops in Europe, she teaches students in India as well as in the West and she uses sound and music therapy to brighten the lives of disabled children in the Kiran Centre, near Varanasi.
