Tantra - Hedonism in Indian Culture
Tantra - Hedonism in Indian Culture
Description
From the Jacket:

This is a brilliant cultural-anthropological study exploring those hedonistic aspects of the pan-Indian heritage which, represented by centuries of the non-Vedic, Tantric tradition, affirm that the pleasurable, especially the sexually pleasurable, is natural as a means to achieve the highest mystical experience. Himself a Tantric initiate, Prem Saran offers a compelling, sympathetic analysis of Tantrism, its place in the Bengali and Assamese cultures, and its pervasiveness in pan-Indian thought and ritual generally.

Prem Saran's is also a cultural critique of modern Indian values and life-ways. In addition, it is an exercise in methodology, employing certain anthropological tools and concepts like "Cultural Debate", "Cultural Criticism", "Hindu Renaissance" and "Pizza-effect" - the last three having been developed by the late Professor Agehananda Bharati whom the author acknowledges as a "constant source of encouragement" during the last decade.

Though tantra is juxtaposed to Vedic traditions as a heterodox, life-affirming tradition, which is both ancient and basic to Hindu interpretations of being, its hedonistic contents have been purposely neglected or suppressed, partly because of the continuing hold of Victorian morality (imbibed from the British missionaries and colonial rulers), and partly because the erotic route to mystical achievement has always been a secret, minority path. Tantra: Hedonism in Indian Cultre will, therefore, fill an existing lacuna in the cultural-anthropology of South Asia. The book carries a Foreword by the distinguished anthropologist, Professor Mattison Mines of the University of California, Santa Barbara, USA.

About the Author:

Prem Saran, a senior member of the Indian Administratie Service, is currently on study leave, working on "Gender, Personhood and Hedonism as Core Themes in Nepalese Tantrism" for his Ph.D in Anthropology at the University of California, USA. A versatile scholar, holding an M.A. (Anthropology) from the University of California, an M.A. (South Asia Regional Studies) from the University of Pennsylvania, an MBA from the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta, and a Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, he carries on "the intellectual tradition" of the Indian civil services.

Now in his early forties, Saran was born in Kerala, is married to an Assamese, and is himself an initiated follower of the Tantric cult.

Hello, Just a short feedback on your new website layout: the old one was better than most of what you come across on the www, but you've managed to make it even better. I very much like the new look of the book pages and 'my gallery' pages. Thanks again for offering me a look inside the books. It's a big help for finding out if it's really what I want. Everything is perfect: the presentation of the items, your way of handling the orders, and the fast and always diligently packed parcels. Thanks to all at Exotic India, Walter

Exotic India is a fine organization to do business with. I have had the best trading experience and the very best customer service. The communication I have had with Vipin K. is of the highest quality; my questions and requests were quickly and professionally answered and fulfilled. A special thanks to the artist Kailash Raj for the beautiful art he produces; I have certainly been enriched by the way his art exemplifies the stories they tell. Many Thanks to all concerned.
W. J. Barnett, USA

An excellent website, as always. I do not even mention its content, which is beautiful beyond words, but I am merely referring to the great functionality and optimal design of your website. Links always work, the information is accurate and complete, images are very clear, including scanned content of your books. A pleasure to purchase from you.
Oreste, USA
