The key player of the saga was Bhishma, who was named Devavrata, but later renamed due to his vow of renunciation for the happiness of his father. He lived the life of a hero and died like one. Here, Bhishma lies on a bed of arrows, shot by Shikhandi. His body does not touch the ground, on account of the arrows sticking out from all over his body. Thus, he lies on a bed of honour. But the narration of the episode would be incomplete if we do not mention what happened immediately after. Bhishma requested for a cushion for his head, “a cushion befitting a warrior”. Arjuna took arrows from his quiver and placed them in a manner that the grandsire’s head found support on their points.

The artist has painted Bhishma’s body in pink colour. The aging man also has a snow white beard, which does not merge well with the rest of the painting but the artist has expressed Bhishma’s age in years very well.
