Description
Art and religion have a complex relationship: art does not necessarily lead to religion but religion may enrich art and art may then interpret and glorify religion. Ganesha has been dominating the Indian religious thought from time immemorial. Since he happens to be the god of learning and the remover of obstacles, besides being the bestower of success, he is invoked at the beginning of all religious and social functions.

Seated on a stool, resting against a bolster, with his feet placed on a low stool, Ganesha is minus his pot belly, a feature he is easily recognized by. In two hands, he holds a lotus and an axe. In the other two - he holds a bowl of modaks and makes a sign of blessing. He wears a turban, held by a kalagi and on his forehead shines the young moon. As in most of his images, one of his tusks is broken. He wears a garland of flowers and pearls in his neck. The trunk is short and coils towards the left. The eyes are human in aspect with well defined eyebrows. The projection of the human limbs, the hands, the fingers, feet and the toes are realistic too.

In the foreground, at Ganesha's feet lies the book he is said to have written for Vyasa. Insignificantly painted is the mouse, without which his icon is incomplete. Various shades of the same color are used for his clothes to depict folds. The background is even more somber than the painting, which because of its palette gives a very serene feeling.
