Indian art re-fashions the mundane world in terms of the transcendental truths and values of myths and metaphysics. Hindu images have a very distinct appearance. The deities possess human characteristics but represent superhuman beings.

In Northern India, the Ram Chandra avatar is perhaps the most popular of all the incarnations of Vishnu. Rama is also the protagonist of Ramayana, which contains some of the most beautiful legends in the sacred writings of the Hindus. Born to King Dasaratha, as the eldest of the four sons, he married Sita, daughter of the King of Mithila. While in exile, his wife was abducted by Ravana, the King of demons. Rama was assisted by Hanuman, the monkey king to kill Ravana and retrieve Sita. A mighty battle ensued between the two armies till the ten headed Ravana was slain.

This is the best of iconic images of Lord Rama. Pale blue of complexion, he has eyes that look like lotus petals, a straight nose that flares at the nostrils, lips that hold a generous smile. He wears a golden crown studded with emeralds and pearls. Earrings, necklaces, bracelets adorn the prince of Ayodhya. He wears a garland of wild flowers. In one hand he holds a bow and the other is held in protection gesture. A quiver of arrows rests on his right shoulder.

In this painting, there is no scope for a wide range of colours but golden is generously used for ornaments and crown etc.
