About The Artiste

Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission publish several journals in English and in number of Indian and foreign languages. The first journal, however, published ‘under the advice and with the encouragement of Swami Vivekananda’ was the Brahmavadin, which means ‘The Messenger of Truth’.

Brahmavadin made its appearance in Madras on Saturday, 14 September 1895. In its prospectus it was stated ‘…it is proposed to start a weekly journal. The main object of the journal is to propagate the principles of the Vedanta Religion of India…’ The prospectus was signed by G. Venkataranga Rao, M.C. Nanjunda Rao and M.C. Alasinga Perumal.

Though proposed to be a weekly journal, in fact, it was a fortnightly magazine. Swamiji’s help, support, and inspiration, as well as Alasinga’s back-breaking labours, made the Brahmavadin a success so long as Alasinga was alive. But within a few years of Alasinga’s death, its publication ceased.

The Brahmavadin was not an official organ of the Ramakrishna Mission, but its contribution to the Mission is immense.

This CD contains the entire archives of the Brahmavadin in a digitized format-for the first time.
