About the Artist

Ani Choying Drolma, born in 1971 in Nepal joined Nagi Gompa on Shivapuri mountain on the slope of the Kathmandu valley at the age of 13. Her education and spiritual training was supervised by the renowned meditation master, Tulku urgyen Rinpoche. She was educated in Buddhist meditation chants rituals and ceremonies and quickly advanced to the position of the chanting master in the nunnery. Lather she resigned from this position to become Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche’s personal health attendant and served him until his parinivana in February 1996. From seeing Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche’s altruistic life style always giving to others without considering his own welfare she developed a sincere desire to use whatever capacities she has to benefit beings as much as possible. Because Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche himself held nuns in the same regard as monks, Ani Choying Drolma believes that creating more opportunities for nuns to study and to develop their own capacities for skillful and compassionate action is the best way she can dedicate herself to her teacher’s vision throughout her life. She is committed to do whatever she can to promote the advancement of nuns not only for their own benefit but because they will then to better prepared to serve and benefit others. The Tara School is Ani Choying dream, a dream she wants to share with others. She mentions an old proverb that says. If I tell you my dream you might forget it if I act on my dream perhaps you will remember but if involve you it becomes your dream too. Knowing that there must be many people who share her dream of providing a key to open the door to education and the skills and knowledge education brings to the many nuns who truly want to act compassionately selflessly and skilfully for the welfare of their fellow beings she welcomes you to share and to participate in her dream.

As a young nun, I was fortunate to have a teacher who recognized clearly and with certainty the inherent equality of men and women who believed all humans to be equally capable of awakening to their enlightened nature. Through his blessings in my own development I have come to realize that real issues and problems of those I have vowed to serve: problems of education health and life skills.

Nun's Welfare Foundation of Nepal is a non government organization dedicated to promoting the education and welfare of nuns so they are better able to serve the larger community.

Education for women has traditionally been neglected In Asia Women’s roles have been strictly defined in ways that did not make educating them seem important and sometimes denied them education on principle Nuns as well as lay women have suffered from this discrimination Respected for their devotion and spiritually nuns are considered not in much need of higher academic education, secular or religious. The Nun’s welfare foundation has been established for the purpose of educating nuns so that they are able to render service unselfishly and effectively to bring peace to human life.

Nun s Welfare Foundation established the Arya Tare school for nuns who want to receive a formal education where they could learn reading writing mathematics and science as well as Buddhist philosophy Nuns from remote areas of Nepal will be able to study so they will be well prepared to help with education and other services when they return so their homes In the future some could become teachers themselves After receiving basis education at the Arya Tara school nuns will be trained as health workers learning basic principles of first aid, nursing, midwifery and infant care. They will have the opportunity to learn both simple Western as well as Tibetan medical practices and common medicines Nuns who are interested in pursuing their medical studies could continue their training end become fully certified Tibetan doctors.

Why Mantras are Sung in Melody

Melody in general has an inherent ability to sooth the disturbed mind, Melody neither sees separation in the minds of its listeners nor does it create any geographical or racial boundary. Melody is the only language which can please the ears of both divine beings, humans or animals. It is the softest and most modest way to put forward a demand to anyone, be they of a domestic, social, political, economic, spiritual or temporal nature.

Long ago, divine beings created volumes of RAGAs , or melodies, to suit people of different mental dispositions. Melody travels faster than just spoken words, and leaves a stronger impact in the minds of listeners than eloquently pronounced words. Adding mantra and prayers to melody creates a holy vehicle through which an ongoing connection to the deities is assured.

It is believed that chanting prayers in melody and singing mantras in tune originated at the time of the Enlightened Buddha when disciples requested the Buddha to turn the wheel of Dharma by singing their requests. There was once a much celebrated monk and disciple of the Buddha whose melodious voice was requested time and again by his compatriots in asking she Buddha to teach.

By listening to inner peace may your mind turn towards dharma may dharma practice become the path clarify confusion mat confusion arise as wisdom.
