Manipuri

Manipuri, the classical dance of the North Eastern State of Manipur in India, is a graceful, peaceful and lyrical dance form. The prevalent ambience during a Manipuri performance is devotional. Ras Leela, Pung Cholam and Dhol Cholam are some of the different forms of this classical dance. Love and devotion, which is the embodiment of the relationship between Lord Krishna and his beloved companion Radha, is best portrayed in this classical dance form through Ras Leela. In Pung Cholam, the artiste plays the Pung (Mridang) while dancing.

Bimbavati Devi

Bimbavati Devi, a gifted performer of Manipuri dance, is the disciple and daughter of Guru Bipin Singh and Kalavati Devi. Dancing came naturally to her as both her parents were Manipuri dance exponents. She has also learned Pung (Mridang) and Thang Ta (Martial Arts). She is the performing artiste at the Manipuri Nartanalaya, Kolkatta. This institute is at the forefront of popularising the dance. Bimbavati Devi was conferred the title of Shringar Mani by Sur Singar Samsad, Mumbai. She was the recipient of the Nandita Kripalini Award from the West Bengal State Academy of Dance, Drama, Music, and Visual Arts, Govt. of West Bengal. She has also received the Sanskriti Award given by the Sanskriti Foundation, New Delhi, in 2004, given to promising dancers and choreographers. She has given many national and international performances.
