Tabla : Pandit Vijay Ghate

My association with the Tabla of over 30 years has taken me from small gatherings to international platforms accompanying the stalwarts of Indian Classical Music. The revelry, excitement and serenity at and between two beats of time has revealed to me slowly, later enveloped me. Rather, it was the eventual immersion into the expanse of beat and space and allowing myself to be transferred in the process that led me to explore “Rhythm Everywhere”.

It all started with the humble typewriter and the concentrated attention to the ‘layakari’ in the relentless tapping of its keys. I started to see and feel the tempo ‘Laya’ all around me. I enjoyed this observer perspective and so invited a fellow tabla player Pandit Vijay Ghate’s command over his instrument is clearly evident in the album, given some lighting-quick tempos, complex sub-divisions and improvisations so effortlessly played.

The album kicks starts with “Freethm” a groove-based track with a delectably exuberant tabla solo. Then comes the “Friendship Express” a meandering journey into the earthbound impulses of the folk beats across India with the tabla as our witness and a varied percussive ensemble of Dhol, Khol, Mridangam, Dholak, Dholaki, Duff etc. “Beat Machine” is an exploration of Laykaari in our mechanical world. “Tele Conversations” is a ‘Sawaal-Jawab’ an eloquent dialogue of the rhythmic patterns over our heart-lines. “Path to Peace” is a divine into the chaos of modern life in search of the universal truth. The great Indian storehouse of the accumulated knowledge about division of time in the form of Sanskrit meters (Chanda & Vrittas) and classical improvisions (Kavits) has been explored in the track “Mantra Shakti”. “Peshkaar – An Evolution” is an acoustic immersion into the evolution of recorded sound from mono to wide angle along with an expressive presentation of the tabla lineage.

This musical endeavor of mine embodies the spirit of modern India and yet has its roots firmly planted in the classical heritage. It dwells into the myriad influences in search of the beating universal soul. I hope you enjoy listening to this album as much as I have enjoyed recording.

Before concluding, I would like to express my gratitude to my entire team of fellow artists especially Pandit Vijay Ghate, Nitin Joshi, Saurabh Bhalerao, Hrishikesh Datar and Shahshank Joshi for accompanying me in this enriching journey.
