About the DVD

Maestro Ali Akbar Khan was born in 1922 in East Bengal (Bangladesh). His father and teacher, the late Padmavibhushan Dr. Allauddin Khan was acknowledge as one of the greatest figures of North Indian classical music in the 20th century. He trained his son for over 20 years with a practice schedule of 18 hours a day.

The maestro first visited the United States in 1955 at the request of the late Lord Yehudi Menuhin. In 1967, he founded the Ali Akbar Collage of music (AACM) in San Rafael, California where he still teaches nine months of the year. He has received numerous awards including five Grammy nominations.

Ali Akbar Khan's reputation as a performer, composer recording artist and teacher is unparalleled. We invited you to visit the collage and experience this great artist in action as he teaches all levels of students this unique musical tradition.

Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri is considered one of India's finest performers as both a soloist and accompanist. Along with accompanying Khansahib in concerts around the world, he regularly performs and records with India's greatest musicians.

Swapanji has held the position of master of percussion at AACM foe the past 21 years. His classes are always full of eager students ranging from beginning to advanced.
