The Freudian Vision of Krishna

Visions are images, such as flashes of light, which are visually perceived, without the external stimulation of the organ of sight. They are intense experiences that belong to the realm of perception, which take place, for example, during dreams. Indeed, visions are special kinds of dreams which find their way into waking life. Freud recognized the special nature of visions when he postulated: 'It is easy to imagine that certain mystics may succeed in upsetting the normal relations between the different regions of the mind, so that, for instance, perception may be able to grasp happenings in the depth of the ego and in the id which were otherwise inaccessible to it.' Thus, an obsessed Radha, devoted in her deep-rooted affections for Krishna, perceives him everywhere, even when performing a mundane task such as filling a pitcher of water at the river.

Kneeling on a mound formed by rocks, both supporting and supported by the empty pot lying recumbent next to her, the sumptuously bejewelled Radha looks on with awe and affection at the image of a resplendent Krishna materializing before her. With her right hand upraised to her cheeks, and with slight, pinkish traces of abashment at this vision of her lover, the wonderstruck Radha gazes at Krishna in a trance-like state, totally oblivious of her surroundings.

The luminous image of Krishna, wearing an extravagant crown with a peacock feather, looms in the background dominating the painted area. His body is soft-hued, and the red, attractive lips kiss melodious rhythms out of the flute he holds in his two hands. A gentle smile plays upon his face and the blazing solar halo framing him seems to have bedazzled Radha with its intensity.

In addition to the figures of Radha and Krishna, the artist ahs densely packed the composition with skilfully painted vegetation. In the foreground can be seen the small water body with lotuses where Radha has come to fill her vessel and on the top right corner are depicted a succession of storm clouds. The artwork is framed within a wide band of gold embossed border.
