The sturdy figure of Avalokiteshvara nevertheless has an almost feminine charm on his face. He is an embodiment of grace and compassion, as expressed in his pensive expression. He is clad in a rich and multicolored skirt-like long dhoti, held at his delicate waist by a golden band. The front of the lower garment is covered with strings of pearls. Noteworthy is the sumptuous galaxy of jewels ornamenting him, commemorating perhaps his status as the most important bodhisattva of Tibet. These include long necklaces set with heavy pendants, a five crested crown set with rubies and emeralds, armlets, bracelets and also flower-shaped earrings (karnaphool).
Avalokiteshvara stands on a lotus emerging from the turbulent waters. Behind the halo at his head can be seen a dragon, symbolizing protection of the Buddhist Law.
