The month of Sawan, when the sky opens its heart and pours on the earth when flowers bloom and trees offer their sweetness condensed in their fruits, is the month when human passions and romantic affections are at the pinnacle. The Nayika becomes Abhisarika- leaving her palace she approaches the beloved, with no fear of nature or the society. Sawan is the season of the union. In this watercolor painting by Kailash Raj, a young couple in the form of Radha-Krishna are shown, sitting in the Jharokha of their marble palace. Embracing the beloved, the Nayaka (Krishna), points to the sky where rain-filled clouds with lightning as their companion are forming a mystical background for their romance. Rows of swans- the birds which symbolize eternal romance, fly across the sky, contrasting against the pitch black with their pearly white forms. The river flows with a zest, enriched by a waterfall on its bank and the trees are laden with ripe fruits.

Below the couple, a peacock is perched on an extension of the door-shade, and in the lowermost right section is the figure of a maid, preparing a Hukkah. Filled with leisure, warmth, and the vibrancy of nature coming to life, this Baramasa painting of Sawan brings with it poetic vigor.
