When Parvati was a young girl, a sage came to her house and informed her that one day she would marry an ascetic whose body would be covered with ash. The prophecy came true. In this kalamkari, the artist depicts the marriage procession of Shiva & Parvati. The couple, seated on the bull Nandi, proceeds towards Kailash, the adobe of Shiva. Preceded by the ganas playing the musical instruments lost in the revelry of the celebrations, Shiva & Parvati have the expression of exhilaration on their faces. On either side of them can be seen Vishnu & Brahma, the god of preservation and creation respectively. Celestial dancers following the procession complete the picture of joy. The union of Shiva and Parvati has a great significance, as implied in the Puranas. And as art draws heavily from literature, the event is frequently depicted in every form of Indian art.
