This brass statue honors Lord Nataraja. Shiva is revered in India and worldwide as Nat, or performance, and Raja, or king of dancers. For ages, Shiva has been a symbol of wisdom and meditation as the cosmic dancer and killer of the Apasamara, or dwarf of darkness. However, as a piece of art, this image was more popular in the early twentieth century. In 1912, A. K. Coomarsawamy's evocative essay "The Dance of Siva" showed this form of Shiva. As a result, the entire world became aware of Shiva's spiritual and artistic vision while performing the Anandatandava.
