Book Description
About the Book
Asvaghosa's Discourse on the Awakening of Faith in the Mahayana, translated by Teitaro Suzuki, is a pivotal text in Mahayana Buddhism that clucidates the fundamental principles of this tradition. The work addresses the nature of reality, the concept of emptiness (sünyata), and the importance of faith in achieving enlightenment. Açvaghosa emphasizes the interconnectedness of all beings and the role of compassion in the spiritual path. This discourse also highlights the dual aspect of existence-phenomenal and noumenal offering insights into the mind's role in perceiving reality. Suzuki's translation makes this essential text accessible, contributing to the understanding of Mahayana philosophy and practice.

Introduction
AÇVAGHOSHA, the first expounder of the Maha-Arif the deepest think ers among the Buddhist patriarchs, is known to most Western Buddhist scholars simply as the author of the Buddha-caritakduya, the famous poem on the life of Buddha. The accounts of his life and of the sig-nificance of his philosophy are so few that the impor-tant influence exercised by him upon the development of the Mahayana Buddhism has been left almost en-tirely unnoticed. That he was one of the most emi-nent leaders among earlier Buddhists; that he was in some way or other connected with the third convoca-tion in Kashmir, probably presided over by the Bhik-shu Parçva; that he had a wonderful poetical genius which rendered great service in the propagation of Buddhism, these facts sum up almost all the knowl-edge possessed by scholars about Açvaghosha.
