Foreword

AmarakOgah, popularly known as "Namalinganugasanam", is a thesaurus in Sanskrit written by Amarasimha. He was one of the Navaratnas (Nine gems, royal courtiers) at the court of Vikramaditya, who ruled around 400 AD. The text constitutes three chapters called Kandas. First chapter Svargadikanda, deals with the words related to Gods and demons.

Second chapter, Thavargadikanda' deals with words related to earth, living and non-living beings.

Third chapter `Samanyadikanda' deals with miscellaneous words and a few words related to grammar.

Amarakaga has number of commentaries and translations. Amarakoghodghatana' by Ksirasvamin is one of the popular commentaries.

Mrs. Teegavarapu Vanja, brought up in a traditional family, whose ancestors were proficient in Sanskrit and a few foreign languages, is very enthusiastic and is very busy in various literary activities.
