These are a few of the selected verses from Charak Samhita. A neurologist having thorough knowledge of Sanskrit would surely be amazed by the precise physiological and pathophysiological knowledge of the nervous system, which exhibit from very subtle to gross visible symptoms on the degeneration or damage to it. The etiological factors mentioned for vatavyadhi at first appear to be very vague to a person of other system of medicine or to a layperson. But with advancement of genetics and molecular basis of diseases the same etiological factors have gained significance to the eyes of an expert. No wonder that the description of avritta vata would not fail to fascinate the professionals of the subject and produce fasciculation out of sheer exhilaration and joy. But then where does the present-day Ayurvedic professional stand? Can he/she claim the credit for anything about this great medical inheritage?
The importance of the subject can be appreciated by those only who have the thorough knowledge. The gullible would either try to laugh at the subject matter since the terminology is not easily decipherable or still worse try to boast by false claims and irreproducible clinical and/or experimental researches. It is high time that the upcoming generations of Ayurvedic community having sound background of other sciences understand that vatavyadhis are not only pakshaghat or gridhrasi but they include degenerative nerve diseases including spinocerebellar, motor neurone diseases and peripheral neuropathies as is appreciated through a few version quoted earlier.
With the intention of spreading awareness about this, drawing the attention of Ayurvedic scientific community towards this and leading them to research in this direction RAV thought of conducting this conference on vatavydhi (neurological disorders). I am happy that a few papers have tried to touch these topics. Being an Ayurvedic professional I feel proud that some of the teachers are guiding their students in this direction, though the number of such professional can still be counted on fingertips. But that should not deter anyone as the movement has been initiated and very soon the momentum would be felt Ayurvedic field throughout India.
