Born in Benaras, U.P., in 1930 Ranedranath bandyopadhyay took his M.A. in English from Calcutta University. He has given nearly four decades to teaching in Gobardanga Hindu College from where he has retired. His other interests include music and painting. He has translated major Western writers like Caudwell, Flaubert, Ivo Andrich in Bengali. He was awarded Sahitya Akademi Translation Prize in 1996 for his Bengali translation Sarpa O Rajju (original : The Serpent and the Rope by Raja Rao). Sesher Kavitar Chitrakalpa (The Imagery of Sesher Kavita/2001) is his only original work in Bengali.
