ABOUT THE AUTHOR

James George Scott (Shway Yoe) author of "The Burman: His Life and Nations" "France and Tong-King", etc.

Preface

It is that some years ago he met at dinner a civilian from British Burma, home on leave. The conversation turned on that country, and the legislator remarked, "Burma-oh, yes, Burma. I had a cousin who was out there for some time, but he always called it Bermuda."

Members of Parliament now perhaps less than ever represent the intelligence and in formation of the country, but there is not so much known of our new province, or of our old provinces for the matter of that, as is desirable. Ordinary publicists seem to consider that a reference to "pestilential swamps" is the most vivid way of giving an idea of what the country is like.
