Description
About The Book

Ajanta and Ellora caves, in the state of Maharashtra in western India, are amongst the greatest triumphs of man's creativity and architectural innovation. These excavations into the solid rock began over 2,000 years ago in Ajanta and continued till the 12th century AD when the last caves in Ellora were sculpted.

This visually attractive guidebook is a detailed introduction to the many attractions and mysteries of these rock-cut temples that are the product of divine inspiration, ingenuity and hard, often dangerous, labour.

In the exhaustive section on Ajanta caves a genuine attempt has been made to retell the legends of Buddha's life and the Jataka stories in order to give tourists a deeper insight into the sublime paintings and sculpture that fills these caves.

The book guides the tourist through Ellora's spectacular temples and monasteries. The great Kailasha, in particular, stands out as the acme of rock-cut architecture for which Ellora is undeniably famous.

A further section describes other places of interest in the area, including Aurangabad and Daulatabad Fort. A comprehensive and up-to-date Practical Information section provides a step-by-step guide to travelling to Ajanta and Ellora, including procuring visas, detailed air and train connections, hotels and restaurants, and tourist information offices.

This is a perfect companion, not just for the intrepid tourist but also for armchair travellers curious to know more about these two magnificent World Heritage Sites.

Testimonials
Thanks again Exotic India! Always perfect! Great books, India's wisdom golden peak of knowledge!!!
Fotis, Greece
I received the statue today, and it is beautiful! Worth the wait! Thank you so much, blessings, Kimberly.
Kimberly, USA
I received the Green Tara Thangka described below right on schedule. Thank you a million times for that. My teacher loved it and was extremely moved by it. Although I have seen a lot of Green Tara thangkas, and have looked at other Green Tara Thangkas you offer and found them all to be wonderful, the one I purchased is by far the most beautiful I have ever seen -- or at least it is the one that most speaks to me.
John, USA
Your website store is a really great place to find the most wonderful books and artifacts from beautiful India. I have been traveling to India over the last 4 years and spend 3 months there each time staying with two Bengali families that I have adopted and they have taken me in with love and generosity. I love India. Thanks for doing the business that you do. I am an artist and, well, I got through I think the first 6 pages of the book store on your site and ordered almost 500 dollars in books... I'm in trouble so I don't go there too often.. haha.. Hari Om and Hare Krishna and Jai.. Thanks a lot for doing what you do.. Great !
Steven, USA
