Description
About The book

After independence there was spurt in research work on Indian Classical music. Nevertheless, there was also a great need for compilation of research work done in the various fields of music. "Glimpses on Indian Musicology" is in consonance with this need. The book contains the works of about 71 prominent and moderately prominent musicologists. Dr. Lovely Sharma is a Sitarist and Musicologist of International repute. She has been recipient of Barsari and National Scholarship. After receiving Gold medal in M.A. music she has never looked back. She did her Ph.D. degree from M.S. University, Baroda. Dr. Sharma joined music department of D.E.I University as a lecturer in 1987. Due to her global recognition, she has been invited at various International fora as a music therapist (Australia in 2005, Sweden in 2006). She has been honored as a Sitarist by Iran Art Academey, Iran. She was also invited for an international conference held in Malaysia as Music Educationist as well a sitarist. Dr. Sharma has presented nearly 35 research papers and has published around 30 research papers in various national and International music journals and books. Her unique project work entitled "Effect of Music on prisoners" throws light on her character to accept challenges and to contribute to social welfare. She was also awarded best teacher's award in 1999 in Delhi and Kalabhusan award in 2004 by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar University, Agra. Her book on `Rajasthani lok geeton ki shastriyata' was published in 2005. She is an external expert of around 30 Indian universities apart from UGC and RPSC, Rajasthan.

Preface

The present book provides comprehensive and authentic in-formation on the contribution of Indian musicologists on Indian music. This work is a part of my long research work for the D.Lit degree. When I commenced forming ideas and collecting data on the pioneering work of the Indian musicologists, I realized that the existing material on the subject was very scattered and I had no alternative but to compile it from various sources throughout India. Before I started collecting data, I glanced through some of the reference sources — both books and journals in which work of some Indian musicologists was discussed. I found some journals informative such as, the journal of Indian musicological society (IMS), Baroda, Shruti (Chennai), Sangeet Natak (Delhi), journal of ITC — SRA. In the second phase of my data collection, I was fortunate to get an opportunity of personally meeting several top musicians and musicologists of this decade. With the help of recorded interviews, I was able to collect authentic informtion and their views which were projected in their work. Ilea of the musicologists whom I meet and interviewed, esixessed their utmost interest and support in this subject. To include a greater number of musicologists with their authored work and for the benefit of thorough analysis, musicaLeflts have been divided into two categories namely pnt4ent and moderately prominent according to the authenticity and variety of their work. It is hoped that present publication would render help in exploring the contribution of eminent musicologists on Indian music and also serve as a useful and authentic reference manual not only for teachers, students and scholars of music but also for all general readers who are interested in Indian Classical music.
