Hinduism is not one single religion, with one prophet and one book. It is a multi- ideas, multi-layered religio-philosophical family, catering to the needs of the highest intellectual as well as the most common man. One is free to believe in God or not to; but the ideas of the Atman and Brahman, and that the Atman is immortal, its significant contributions to world thought, are essential to belief, The ideas of Prana, Prajna, Karma and Rebirth, quite popular in modern times, support the former to develop a comprehensive system and discipline.
There are hundreds of books dealing with aspects of the subject. Tolerance is its key ethical value; Non-violence is embedded in its nature and character. It does not prosetylise the chief culprit of religious dissentions. It does not bury its dead and frees the soul to discover further truths of life.
The supreme in Hinduism is formless, as also with form. Vedanta is its ideal. Its idols, temples, ceremonies and festivals are sober yet cheer-oriented, and provide an all inclusive Hinduism celebrated by everyone living in the country and else where known by this name.
