Preface

The book Historical Landmarks of Central-Eastern India was originally conceived to be brought out in a single volume later it was considered to be voluminous and unwieldy in that case, so the idea came to divide it into two Parts Besides, the presentation of the two Parts would give a coherent narration. Part I containing the Texts and their illustrations, with historical analyses, of Source Materials recently discovered or comparatively unknown have already been brought to limelight. It has been published under the caption Corpora of Historical Materials, Part 1

But all the historical landmarks could not come in Part-1. A lot of other landmarks of history, of the period relating to source materials (4-20 century A.D) presented in Part-1, would have remained unreplenished, without reinterpretation of the old and known sources, pari passu, in the light of the new sources of history. An average reader even a scholar will not get a complete and coherent picture of the important historical developments of a hinterland of the country without both the Parts. So the landmark developments not included in Part I have been encapsulated in Part II, in three Units each Unit containing three Chapters for the entire period of known history of the land.

I. Historical Developments

In Unit I an account of the Historical Developments has been given in three Chapters. In Chapter I the circumstances leading to the "Formation of Royal States" in Kolala-Käntära region in mid-4 century A.D. by a dynasty called Nala have been traced. Its decline in about 500A.D. was followed by the emergence of two new dynasties-Sarabhapuriya and Eastern Ganga in Kosala and Kantara on the northern and the southern parts respectively of the erstwhile Nala dominion. A new dynasty called Pandu succeeded the former in 700 A.D. while the latter continued their rule over a kingdom in Käntära, which they named Tri-Kalinga. Tri-Kalinga continued to exist till the beginning of 9 century A.D.
