Book Description
PREFACE

The present work, India—A Nation, is a collection of twenty-three sclect studies of the Late Prof. V. S. Agrawala that appeared from time to time in various journals and periodicals over a period of three decades. The above title which has guided us to arrange the specific papers together, belongs, however, to Prof. Agrawala, who had projected to write a work under this very name fer the National Book Trust, India, New Delhi, which also made its announcement sometime in 1963-64.

Our central idea guiding this collection has been to put together in one place some of his already published and well-known writings on various aspects of Indian cultural tradition that bring to focus certain fundamental techniques the Indian thinkers adopted to evolve a cultural synthesis and national unity of this vast and ancient people through ‘the ages. Over a period of forty years of his writing, Prof. Agrawala published both in English and Hindi numerous papers dealing with diverse elements of our distinctive civilisa- tion and its ever-opetative national consciousness and unifying ideologics. His Hindi book, Bharata Ki Maulika Ekata (i.e. The Fundam: ntal Unity of India) appeared in 1954, which he wished to follow with a work on the same lines in the Eaglish language also.

As mentioned, all of the papers collected here were published in different periodi- cals and research volumes, we are able to give the proper reference of their first appearance not in all caes; a few of them appear to have remained unpublished due to various reasons. But we cannot be sure on this point and in future the reference may be traceable in such cases too. However, their typed copies being preserved in the papers of the late Author, ‘we bave taken this opportunity of presenting them to the readers. The following is the bibliography as can be made presently.
