About The Book

Jagajjyotirmall is a distinguished Maithili litterateur belonging to the Medieval period who evinced a curious medley of poetic talent, erudition and royalty in his personality. He was born in Bhaktpur lineage of Malla dynasty. He ruled during the last phase of the sixteenth century till the first half of the seventeenth century. He has in his place incorporated novel themes, ideal characters, emotional exuberance, elegant imagination, social customs and immaculate diction. He raised lyrics and plays from the level of ordinary mean of recreation to fine medium of devotion, austerity and betterment of humanity. Consequently Jagajjyotrimall's works have come to occupy a place of glorious, consummate and high ranking poetry.

Foreword

During the middle Ages there were three branches of Malla dynasty in Nepal valley of which Bhaktapur was the chief one. Jyotirmall was of this very lineage. He is widely acclaimed in Nepal as a monument of literary ac complishments. There is a comely confluence of the three streams of poetical talent, pedantry and royalty in his personality.

Erudite in 'different branches of lore and learning, Jagajjyotirmall, no doubt, wrote or had others to write various books on music, astrology, herbals, ethics and erotics but he is, above all, a prolific literatteur. A number of his literary works published so far have from time to time been taken up for critical appreciation and evaluation. In the present treatise attempts have been made to thoroughly investigate into his literary personality and creative writings. As such, apart from the published works, un published ones too have been incorporated into the bulk of this book.
