Book Description
Foreword

It gives me great pleasure to introduce to students of Indian Philosophy and Gujarati Litera ture the doctoral thesis of Dr. Y. J. Tripathi. The author has given a brief exposition of the Philosophy of Gaudapada and Samkara in the first Part and has later on ably shown with apt quotations from the Gajarati Literature how the Philosophy of Kevaladvaita has been absorbed and expressed in Gujarati Poetry by writers from Narasimha Mehta (15th Century A.D.) down to the modern period. The author is well qualified for the treatment of an enchanting subject like this, as he happens to be the son of a well-known mystic of modern Gujarat, Sri Sagara Maharaja. As in the case of Samkara School, the concept of Advaita is dynamic in the Gujarati Poetry. And it is very interesting to find how the Advaita has assumed the form of mysticism with the Gujarati poets of the 19th Century and onward, I congratulate Dr. Tripathi on the learned Thesis which evidently bears testimony to his patient labour and critical faculty.
