Book Description
Introduction
Vasanthi Padukone recounts having met an astrologer who told her she would soon have a world-famous son destined to look after the whole family. She was only fifteen at the time and newly married, so she brushed off the prediction from shyness at the idea of having a child. In an autobiographical essay published in the now defunct Indian magazine Imprint in April 1979. Vasanthi Padukone writes of the day she gave birth to Guru Dutt. Her labour pains had become so intense that she was rushed to a charitable hospital far from their home in Banglaore by her mother and husband, Shivshankar Padukone. On Thursday, 9 July 1925, at noon, her first son was born. She was sixteen at the time. Bundled in a small blanket, the baby was brought to her. "I could not believe the child was mine. My own flesh and blood. I kissed the baby's forehead... how cute he looked with his curly jet-black hair, fair complexion and big eyes. He weighed less than 6lbs, the nurse said." Guru Dutt was the only boy among seven girls to be born in the hospital that day. His family named him Vasant Kumar, but when, a few years later, the child fell very ill, a healer told the Padukones that the name was unlucky for the boy, so from Vasant Kumar he became Guru Dutt. The year 1951 saw the start of Guru Dutt's thirteen-year career as director, actor and producer a career that had its ups and downs with some films becoming commercial successes and others less so. However, it is his three classics, Pyuasa, Kaagaz ke Phool and Sahib Bibi aur Ghulam that have posthumously sealed his reputation worldwide as an all-time master of Indian cinema for audiences and critics alike. The wonderfully unique thing about Guru Dutt's films is the pleasure they still give. His singular approach to cinema sets him apart with his subtle frame compositions and lighting, excellent understanding of narrative and emotions, use of song, and the restrained performances he exacts from all his actors, including when he himself plays the lead.
