About the Book

Jyotirao 'Jyotiba' Govindrao Phule was a prominent social reformer and thinker of the nineteenth century India. He led the movement against the prevailing caste-restrictions in India. A biography of Jyotiba was penned by Dhananjay Keer in 1974 titled, 'Mahatma Jyotibha Phule: Father of Our Social Revolution'. The Mahatma Phule Museum in Pune was set-up in honour of the great reformer. Crawford Market in Mumbai is rechristened as Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Mandai and the Maharashtra Krishi Vidyapeeth at Rahuri, Maharshtra was renamed Mahatma Phule Krishi Vidyapeeth. Along with his wife, Savitribai Phule, he is regarded as pioneers of women's education in India. They were the first native Indians to open a school for girls in India way back in August 1848. The great social reformer - Mahatma Phule, His period can, be a suitably described as the dawn of revolution in the history not only of Maharashtra but of the country as a whole in the various fields like Education, Caste Systems, Agriculture, Economics, Women and widow upliftment, Human Rights, Untouchability ,Social Equality. Jyotiba suffered a stroke in 1888 and was rendered paralyzed. On 28 November, 1890, the great social reformer, Mahatma Jyotirao Phule, passed away.
