About the Book The Hingne Stree-Shikshan Samstha has now completed 67 years of its life. For the last 25 years Maharshi Karve did not take an active part in the day-to-day work of the Samstha. But his presence at Hingne served to inspire, stimulate and guide the workers of the Samstha, which has conducted its affairs and will continue to do so in the future on the lines laid down by Karve many years ago. The Samstha is naturally proud of the fact that Karve started the Women's University at Hingne and the Samstha developed the University for nearly twenty years. After the University became independent and moved to Bombay, the Samstha underwent considerable expansion and at present functions from four different centres, through nine branches. There are nearly 2500 pupils studying in classes ranging from the pre-primary to the high school and training college level. About 400 of these pupils dep-end wholly or partly on the Samstha, the budget for their maintenance being over a lakh of rupees per year. The annual budget of the Samstha is about five lakhs of rupees. The Sam-stha requires about ten to fifteen lakhs of rupees to expand in the near future. The work done by the Samstha is before the public and its future progress de. pends on the aid it receives. The public revered Karve and helped the Samstha liberally, and the Samstha in turn was able to serve the community to the best of its ability. The Samstha is confident that even after the death of Karve, the help from the public will continue unabated.

Introduction The munificent donation received from Shri Motichand G. Shah, a philanthropist from Bombay, enabled the Samstha to establish the Maharshi Karve Museum in 1959. In this hall are preserved Karve's photographs, statues, addresses presented to him on various occasions and other souvenirs. In 1961 Mr. L. V. Sathe, a well-known architect of Bombay visited the Samstha and the Museum. He then mooted the idea of the publication of an Album (Pictorial Biography) so that information regarding Karve's work could be easily obtained by the common man. He also offered a liberal donation to enable the Samstha to publish this Album on April 18, 1963.
