Foreword
I am delighted to learn that a volume entitled New Horizons in History and Culture is being brought out as a Felicitation Volume in honor of Professor Manmath Padhy, Professor, P.G. Department of History, Berhampur University, Odisha. This volume contains many well-researched articles contributed by eminent scholars and historians of national and international repute.

History is the study of the human past as it is described in the written documents left by human beings. It is a narration of events which have already happened. It is an account of rise and fall of nations, and other great changes which have affected the social and political conditions of human race. The main purpose of the study of history is to reconstruct a truthful account of the past. There is an imperative to study history as it would enable a person to cope with future challenges in life.

The term culture refers to the "sum total of integrated learned behavior patterns which are characteristics of the members of a society and which are, therefore, not the result of biological inheritance". It includes good taste, refinement, achievement in and appreciation of the fine arts, music and literature. Culture refers to the behavior traits that distinguish man from other species.

Culture consists of all the social organizations through which members of the society are grouped together into such entities as family, community and state. Culture is crucial to all human existence.

It consists of normative behavior patterns and showed ways or patterns of thinking and feeling as well as doing. Thus, a culture is a society's system of common heritage.

I congratulate the Editorial Board for their painstaking efforts and Endeavour to bring out this edited volume to commemorate the occasion of superannuation of Professor Manmath Padhy, an eminent historian, sincere teacher, committed researcher, creative writer, besides being a dynamic academic administrator.

I am sure this volume will be of immense help to those who have interest to update their knowledge on different dimensions of history and culture. I am confident that this volume will also receive wide acclaim from the general public.

I record a word of appreciation for the publishers for bringing out this volume for the benefit of those having research interest in history and culture.

Professor Padhy has a pleasant personality and exemplary enthusiasm, zeal and commitment for teaching, research and administration. Though he is going to retire on attaining the age of superannuation, those who have come. in close contact with him, one cannot believe that he is retiring. I hope that Professor Padhy will continue to contribute to history and knowledge with same enthusiasm and zeal during his post-retirement life. I wish him a peaceful and prosperous life.
