Book Description
Preface

The book "Physiology in Ayurveda" in English is written primarily for the students of B.A.M.S. & M.D. (Ay) course of Indian Universities, keeping the context with the recent changes in medical education and the advent of core curriculum. This book provides the detail knowledge of dosha, dhatu, upadhatu and mala keeping in pace with latest information and newer understanding of the discipline. The material of this book has been kept up-to-date knowledge and special emphasis has been given to dosha, dhatu, upadhatu and mala with modern correlation. M C Q 's have become an important part for Post Graduate entrance examinations. Without extensive practice, MCQs cannot be answered, as they need instant recollection from memory.

In conclusion, I would advice my students to use this book concurrently and accordingly to their own needs. Their aim should be to understand the concepts and principle involved in Ayurveda physiology and not mere memorization of the facts. My efforts will be successful if the students achieve the real benefit from this book. It is my grate privilege to express my heartiest gratitude and indebt ness to my principal, Dr. V.L.N.Sastry, colleagues, staffs of S.J.S.Ayurveda college, Chennai, for their proper guidance, thorough supervision, inspiration, valuable suggestion and constant encouragement to complete this book. I express my thanks to my students Shakti, Tamil, Abhisekh, Satya, for their help for completing this book in due time. At last but not least I offer my sincere gratefulness to my parents, brother, sister, wife and my only son for their constant encouragement during my life and to complete my book in proper time.

Foreword

It is of great pleasure to introduce the book authored by Dr. Chitta Ranjan Das on the subject of Kriyashareera titled "Physiology in Ayurveda". The author primarily emphasized on "dosha dhatu and mala" and it by itself focuses the nature of human physiology, the cardinal feature of which is nothing but interrelated functional balance with perfect co-ordination of body and mind. For example, Brain controls . nervous supply to the heart and parallelly heart offers proper blood supply to the brain, thus both are inter- dependent and one’s failure disturbs the other. Such a balance is the nature’s gift. Similarly the concept of TRIDOSHAS indicates the functional balance of different systems. DHATUS are the supporting tissues and certain hormones of the body. MALAS refer to excretory manifestations. Tissues multiply and grow (DEHA), their assurance of nutrition is KAAYA and the character of decay and degeneration is SHAREERA. Thus the three synonyms of the body as per Ayurveda stand as functional triad. No doubt, the current deep concepts of physiology well correlate with ancient principles of Ayurveda Kriyashareera but the complete outlook of Ayurvedic physiology is very difficult to explain in the terms of Western concepts, ex. OJUS, MARMA etc. The modern physiology may still further advance whereby the Ayurvedic concepts could be appropriately correlated.

In the light of above scenario, it is not that easy to teach the subject to the students ruling out their doubts and confusions. Their quest of research and clarity must be respected. Keeping this necessity in view, Dr.Chitta Ranjan Das made tremendous efforts to explain the Ayurvedic physiology in a palatable and simple way. His commitment in the instance is praise worthy. I wish him all the best in his career and hope he maintains the same spirit to bring out some more books of this like.
