Preface

The establishment of an egalitarian society has been our cultural and civilizational aspiration for long. However, despite various efforts, discriminations against disabled exist in our society. The concern for them is manifested in modern times.

On 27th December, 2015, the Prime Minister Narendra Modi while his radio address "Mann ki Baat" said that physically-challenged people have a "Devine Ability" and that they should be called "Divyang" instead of Viklang. Now the time has come when we need to integrate this underprivileged, discriminated and disadvantaged class into mainstream. Unless there is larger participation of people and awareness to do something for the disabled we cannot achieve desirable results.

I am extremely delighted to bring forward my edited book titled `Reinventing Divyang: Towards Social Inclusion' based on Divyang is the outcome of a National Seminar sponsored by ICSSR, New Delhi, on "Protection of rights of Divyang Children" which was held at DAV PG College Varanasi.

The present book will try to cover the different gamut of disability related issues and concern in India. The book makes an effort to comprehend issues of Divyang in holistic manner. This work will be helpful in documenting the policy measures for new roadmap for the critical and sensitive issue. Besides, accepting the crude reality we need to introspect where we are lacking in our efforts to fulfill the need of this special section of society.

I acknowledge senior academicians, my colleagues, research scholars of different universities and colleges who had shown trust in my work and provided the much needed resources for the compilation of my work.

I am thankful to the Principal and Staff of DAV PG College for their encouragement and support. I am also thankful to my family and friends for their unconditional support.

Foreword

Indian society had been perceived as stagnant society by the western scholarship. The perception has changed since the beginning of the new century since it was nexus of west that during the colonization binaries were created which brought rupture to our ancient holistic society. However, our National Movement tried to create the socio-political consciousness that made Hindu Society back to its core society and with the process of development and democratization the inclusion of margins into the main stream. In recent times we have witnessed how political vision and transformative ideas could prompt inclusive process of the society.

Modernity that had relegated physically challenged human being into segmented lot of clinical realm. The Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji with his thought and deed coined the term "Divyang", which incorporated physically challenged persons in the hold of family and the society without stigmatization.

The book 'Reinventing Divyang: Towards Social Inclusion" is in the regard to make a holistic society, which have bond among the indigenous culture and tied by spiritual affinity for which India stands. I am sure the book has potential to look a fresh at the lives of thousands of persons of this country. The book unfolds the processes that unstigmatize the society and brings love and affection in the relationships rather than segregation and disturbance.

The book has chapters related to perceptions, attitudes, challenges and practices regarding social values in contemporary society towards Divyang. The book is an attempt to fill up the gap.
