Publisher's Note

This year being the centenary year of Padmabhushan Shri Karamashi Jethabhai Somaiya we have great pleasure in bringing out the book Samir-Sanskrit-Adhyayanam, a project undertaken by K.J. Somaiya Bharatiya Sanskrit Peetham.

There has been a great tradition of grammarians who authored books on Sanskrit grammar. However these books are now beyond the reach of the common learners. There are many people across the world who are interested in Sanskrit. They face the difficulty of script as they are not conversant with the Devanagari normally used in books of Sanskrit. Samir-Sanskrit-Adhyayanam is the outcome of the efforts undertaken by the staff members of K.J. Somaiya Bharatiya Sanskriti Peetham to overcome these difficulties. It gives the transliteration and translation along with the matter in Sanskrit. The rules are explained in English and ample exercises are given with solutions. This book has been prepared with a view to facilitate the learners to master Sanskrit language step by step. We hope that the book will serve the purpose of a miniature reference book in Sanskrit Grammar. Samir-Sanskrit-Adhyayanam covers the basic concepts in Sanskrit grammar such as declensions, conjugation of verbs in selected tenses and moods and compounds. The tables prepared for declension and conjugation include the prototypes that will enable the learners to prepare the remaining forms. An exhaustive list of commonly used forms of verbs and verbal derivatives which constitutes the Appendix will be very useful for the learners. K. J. Somaiya Bharatiya Sanskriti Peetham plans to bring out two volumes dealing with Sanskrit grammar of which the present book is the first. The second volume will discuss advanced topics of Sanskrit grammar.

Foreword

It is a matter of great pleasure for me to pen my overall impression about the book entitled 'Samir Sanskrit-Adhyayanam' written by Dr. Kala Acharya, the Director, K. J. Somaiya Bharatiya Sanskriti Peetham, Dr. Lalita Namjoshi and their collegues. The book is excellent in overall presentation. It can be said that this book is one of the best to study Sanskrit through Computer.

In the present life, Computer have become inseparable item in human life. Since birth till death computer is used on every occasion. The spread of Computer knowledge is so wide-spread that today the word literacy is identified with Computer literacy world-over.

Dr. Kala Acharya and her team has presented the knowledge of Sanskrit through this book to any keen and sincere learner of Sanskrit, through Internet. Total 40 lessons which are presented in this book for Computer network cover virtually all basics of Sanskrit language. If these lessons are studied properly, understood properly and retained in memory properly, the learner can acquire profound knowledge of Sanskrit with sound grammatical base. The authors have classified the lessons in a very meticulous way starting with types of syllables of the language. They have given proper pronunciations of each of them in Devanagari and Roman script. The progressive lessons acquaint the learner with genders, numbers and the cases. Every lesson carries the exercise, to confirm the knowledge of the student for perfection. Another major contribution of the book is to provide maximum variety of words through the lessons to improve and increase the vocabulary of the learner. Tenses and moods for verbal forms have been presented in the most captivating style of story type exercises. The book has covered complete basic grammar including variety of compounds. The authors have done a great service to the students by providing mini-Dhaturupakosa as a readyreckoner to the students. All these exercises have been presented with Computer as medium for the learner. This book can reach every doorstep through computers. Now there is no need to find out a teacher and take his tuitions to learn Sanskrit language. Dr. Kala Acharya and her team have done a very systematic careful, attractive and simple presentation for those thousands of persons who could not study Sanskrit for want of teacher or tutor. These deprived souls having strong urge to study Sanskrit, can now confidently depend on this text book and their computer-sets to satisfy their inner urge to study Sanskrit. Much can be said about this book because all aspects of Sanskrit language have been dealt with in a positive way and effective style. I refrain from going into further details because every learner must be given the right opportunity to appreciate this excellent book in his/her own way. I hope that the next edition of the book will provide pictorial guidance.

I must congratulate Dr. Smt. Kala Acharya and her team for this most useful computer age book for Sanskrit learners. This book can be termed as one of the pioneering works in Computer lessons for Sanskrit language. If these types of books are studied widely all over the globe the wish of Ricks Briggs to make Sanskrit a medium of Computer, may comes true in future. I give best wishes to Dr. Kala Acharya and her team of co-writers and all those who are associated with this book.
