It gives me great joy and satisfaction to write a few words on this momentous occasion of the Golden Jubilee of Samskrita Ranga, a pet organization of our revered founder, Dr. V. Raghavan. My commitment and involvement in the activities of the Ranga is three-fold: first, as the daughter of the founder, secondly as an actor-member of this unique organization from 1958, and thirdly, as its Secretary in the last two decades; with this background, I deem it a great privilege to be presenting this Golden Jubilee Volume of the Samskrita Ranga to friends and lovers of Sanskrit Drama.
The Celebration of the Golden Jubilee of the Ranga takes place on August 23rd, 2008, following the Birth Centenary Celebration of its Founder on August 22nd, 2008. Eminent personalities, scholars, students and lovers of Sanskrit, Dance, Drama and Music are expected to grace the occasion. The original Sanskrit Play - Anarkali of Dr.V.Raghavan will be staged to mark this Celebration.
Samskrita Ranga which was started with a visionary zeal by Dr. V. Raghavan, has contributed in its own unique way to propagate Sanskrit Drama, through Stage Productions and Research work in the varied aspects of authentic Sanskrit Drama, its production and Aesthetics. During the past 50 years of unbroken activity, the Ranga has rightly claimed a unique status for its vibrant role in this sphere.
The present volume contains a collection of valuable material on Sanskrit Drama and related topics of interest, a major part of which covers some of the collected writings of Dr.Raghavan including some unpublished ones also; Samskrita Ranga's work, and the contribution of its founder as a dramatist are described through certain articles, while there are some others focusing on other art forms like Kachipudi dance and Arayar Sevai, a ritualistic dance ; an analysis of the play Orubhangam, is yet another one from one of Ranga's actor-member. Appreciation of Ranga's plays, a list of its productions over the past five decades and an interesting collection of Photographs from different produc-tions, make this volume a memorable souvenir to mark the occasion. This special volume is placed as a homage to the memory of the Scholar-Savant, founder of Samskrita Ranga -Dr. V. Raghavan.
It is the earnest desire of all of us who are associated with this noble organization to continue the far-sighted goals of its illustrious founder, and to perpetuate his memory by extending our commitment to the cause of Sanskrit in all its splendorous forms.
In preparing this volume, I have been helped through-out by Dr.P.Ramachandrasekhar, one of our young, dynamic, spirited, actor-member; I thank him for his time and duty-bound involvement. Sri.K.Venkatesh, son of Sri.Kannan of Kayveekay Letter Prints, another longtime associate of ours is to be thanked for his care and patience in printing this volume in a befitting manner; On behalf of all of us at Samskrita Ranga, we extend our gratitude to Dr.C.S. Sundaram, the present President and earlier a longtime Secretary along with Dr.S.S.Janaki, since the inception of the Ranga, for his support.
