The plant thrives in warm and dry climates and resembles a cactus with fleshy, thorny leaves. Unlike other plants that wither and die it closes its pores to prevent moisture loss.

The curative and preventive properties of aloe vera were known as far back as 4th century BC. There is enough evidence of it from references in Greek and Egyptian literature.

Aloe vera was used in olden times to treat multiple conditions raging form battle wounds infections, ulcers, burns and blisters to stomach and bowel related problems. Even today it is used to prevent and treat such conditions.

It is a very short streamed succulent plant growing about 80-100 cm tall spreading by offsets and root sprouts. The sap of the aloe vera plant is a thick mucilaginous gel which has a lot of medicinal uses. It is this gel which is used in various ailments and ointments.

There are over 200 species of Aloe but it is the Aloe Barbadensis miller (aloe vera or true aloe) plant which has been most beneficial to mankind because of its medicinal properties.
