SHAHJAHANABAD / OLD DELHI (Tradition and Colonial Change)
SHAHJAHANABAD / OLD DELHI (Tradition and Colonial Change)
Description
About the Book:

Shahjahanabad / Old Delhi brings together contributions from a group of international scholars from different disciplines focusing on the historical and social development of Shah Jahan's ingenious Imperial City. A common thread shared by all contributions is the use all authors make of an outstanding historical document - a manuscript map - held in the India Office & Records in London. A handsomely redrawn version of this unique map is included in the volume. It offers a wealth of topographical, social and institutional data for understanding structure and significance of Delhi's Walled City as the Indo-Muslim capital at the peak of Moghul rule in India. The book also covers the fate of this magnificent city under British rule and during the first three decades of independency.

About the Editors:

Eckart Ehlers is Professor of Geography at the University of Bonn and member of the Scientific Committee of the International Human Dimension Programme on Global Environmental Change (1992-2002, Chair: 1996-9). His research work comprises inter alia comprehensive studies on urbanisation and urban development in the Middle East and South Asia, on rural development and human ecology.

Thomas Krafft is Scientific Secretary of the German National Committee on Global Change Research and head of an interdisciplinary research unit at the University of Bonn. His research work includes studies on historical and modern development of Delhi and on health implications of environmental degradation in South Asia and Europe.
