Book Description
Foreword
Srimad Bhagavatam has a unique place among the Hindu puranas because of the popular appeal of pure Bhakthi which is its dominant theme.

In the Bhagavatham, written in the ancient Sanskrit Language, one can find practically. everything which, in one way or the other goes to contribute to the structure of a hued philosophic and contemplative edifice. Besides being an .ancient work' of ornate poetry. Srimad Bhagavatam like a prism reflects the varied facets of Indian culture.

The Bhagavata Purana has. pin aptly described as. the spiritual bur tor churned out of ' the ocean of the Veda M ilk for the benefit of those 'who are pure in heart. free from malice and envy. and are keen to hear it'. Dry philosophy seldom appeals to the human mind. But in the Bhagavatam even the' most abstruse philosophic truths are put across by means of stories and legends. This is the secret 0 its popularity among all classes of people.

vecavvasa, the composer of this encyclopedia of Bhakthi doctrine. who collide not have peace of mind even after composing Mahabharata, was advised by Nerada, a celestial sage, to compose this Purana describing deeds of Lord Sri Krishna to get rid of mental depression. This reveals the greatness of Sri mad Bhagavatam which occupied a place on a par With Vedas, the sacred scriptures.

All-out efforts are being made by the T. T. Devasthanams to foster and encourage the Hindu Dharma and Culture in India and abroad. With this objective in view, the T.T. Devasthanams has taken steps J to accelerate its publication activities during the last few years. The Publications Department has already brought out a number to standard works on the Agamas, Indian Philosophy, Art and Architecture. They include higt'lly works and commentaries on regions texts.

The T.T. Devasthanams has undertaken the publication of a critical edition of the sacred scripture 'Srimad Bhagavatam' in Sanskrit with Trimata commentaries. This superb edition with commentaries on the whole of the I3hagavatam IS a master-piece in the field of the scriptural Literature in India.

To our knowledge, there is no edition or exposition of this type on the Bhagavatam brought out hitherto. We hope, the first volume of this much awaited book now being released will be well received by the readers.

f)~. P. Radhakrishna Sarma. Editor and his colleagues deserve congratulations for the interest they have evinced in bringing out this volume in a befitting manner.

Preface
Sanskrit is considered as the oldest of all languages and it is called Devabhasha. The ancient Vedic and Puranic literature was composed in this language.

The Vedas are said to be the eternal scriptures. The purport of these Vedas is brought out in the form of various interesting stories in the Itihasas and Puranas.

Srimad Bhagavatam is accepted by many scholarly people to be the most important of all Puranas, just like the Ganges amongst the rivers, Vishnu amongst the gods and Siva amongst the devotees of Srimannarayana.

Bhagavad-Gita is enriched with many philosophical theories and they in turn are illustrated through attractive stories in Bhagavata.

Bhaktiyoga is the easiest way in Kaliyuga to cross the ocean of Samsara which is glorified in Bhagavatam.

The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams has already published 'Srimad Bhagavatam' with three commentaries in 14 volumes after getting them edited by eminent scholars.

The first skandha of this Purana was published in 1989 by Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams. As the stock of the printed books got exhausted, and the demand for this book grew, the reprint of this book has become necessary.

We are immensely happy to present this second edition of the first skandha of'Bhagavatm to the readers who are interested in our ancient and divine literature.

We hope that the readers would receive this book with utmost devotion and make the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam's efforts fruitful.
