The text of the Unadisutras in various recensions has been published in four parts. The Unadisutras from one of the Supplements to the study of Sanskrit Grammar in all its systems. Every systems of Sanskrit Grammar has its Unadisutras of many of these systems have got authoritative commentaries by eminent writers
The most popular of the several sets of the several sets of Unadisutras is the one that has been commented upon by Ujjvaladatta, Bhattoji Diksita and others. This is the most favoured Unadi as it belongs to the system of Panini.
The Aunadikapadarnava is a work in the form of metrical stanzas, dealing with an explanation of the Unadi Sutras of Panini. The manuscripts on which the edition is based are incomplete and as such it is not possible to present the work in its complete form. The importance and usefulness of this work is quite plain. I have very great pleasure to introduce it in this series.
The Aunadikadarnava of Perusuri, which is being issued now for the first time as the fourth part in the "Unadi Sutras in Various Recensions" is based on two copies of the work, one in palm leaf and the other in paper, both deposited in the Government Oriental MSS. Library, Madras. The records do not show, but it is very likely that of the two, the paper manuscript in Devanagari is a transcript made from the palm leaf original in telugu characters, as the errors of omission and commission, happen to be common. In the alternative, the original might have been the same for the paper as well as palm leaf MSS. now available. For all practical purposes therefore, it should be admitted that the present edition is based on a single manuscript.
Brahmasri Rao Bahadur S.K. Padmanabha Sastrigal, formerly of the Presidency College, Madras, and now of the Madras Sanskrit College, as been, as usual, unstinting in his willingness to help me in this publication. He has found time in spite of delicate health and heavy work, to read through the proofs and make valuable suggestions and I wish to express my grateful thanks to him Brahmasri S. K. Ramanata Sastrigal, my former Colleague in the University was good enough to read through a major portion of the proof and I am much indebted to him. Dr. C. Kunhan Raja, my colleague and Head of the Department has been of great help to me in this, as in other publications, and I am much obliged to him. I thank the Curator of the Government Oriental MSS. Library Madras, for having placed the manuscript at my disposal for a long time.
