Book Description

Introduction 1. At lost this edition of the Vakyaradiya of Bharthari, handa III, pt ii is being published nine years after the publication in 1963 of Kanda 111 pti Deccan College Monograph Series 21.) It is not that nothing happened during this long interval. In 1965, my English translation of the kanda I with the Vrth appeared. (D C. B. C. S. J S. 26). My critical edition of the Vakyapadiya, Kanda I. with the Fri and the Paddhati was published in 1966, (D C. M.S.32). My work entitled Bhartrhari a study of the Vakyapadiya in the light of the ancient commentaries was published in 1969 (D. C. B. C. S. J. Series 68). My English translation of the Vakyapadiya, kanda III, pt. i came out in 1971 (D. C. B. C. S. J. Series 71.) The present volume has been in the press for about five years. The distance bet- wean Poona, the place of publication and Lucknow, my place of residence, and the long time taken by the proofs sent both ways by registered post are chiefly responsible for this delay.

2. As this volume is only the continuation of my edition of the Vakyapadiya. kanda III pt. i published in 1963, the critical appa- ratus mentioned in the Introduction to that part is the same for this part also, speaking generally. There are, however, a few differences. For example, mss B. C, D2 H, L, N and O, included in the Critical Apparatus of handa III, pt. i, do not contain the seven samuddesas, kriya to Vyti included in this part ii. On the other hand, some mss. utilized for this volume, do not contain the samuddelas already published in the first part. The Critical Apparatus for this part ii is therefore, as follows.
