Lord Kalantaka To The Rescue Of Sage Markandeya
The young Sage Markandeya is the object of Lord Shiva’s divine grace. Blessed to Sage Mrikandu as his only son and destined to live a mere sixteen years, he learnt the Mahamrityunjaya mantra (the mantra of the great conqueror of death, an allusion to none other than Lord Shiva Himself) just in time for the arrival of Lord Yama, the presider over death and the afterlife.

It is said that at that juncture between life and death, Lord Shiva arrived in His Kalantaka form to the rescue of Sage Markandeya. ‘Kala’ in Sanskrt stands for time and the inevitability of it, and ‘antaka’ means one who ends. The folk painting that you see on this page depicts the victory of Lord Kalantaka over Lord Yama. To the right is the dusky Lord Yama astride the ferocious grey bull of patalaloka (the netherworld). He is making straight for the Sage who, to the left of the painting, clings with fervent devotion to the Shivalingam. Lord Kalantaka rises above the Shivalingam and - in all the glory of His ashen-coloured chaturbhujadhari (four-armed) roopa (form) - He pierces Lord Yama with His trishool (trident) and defeats Him.

The backdrop is a powerful, complex network of vicious snakes and seductive vines, which make for an otherworldly allure. Zoom in on each aspect of the same to appreciate the skill and perfection with each it has been executed.

Handsome Apsara Feeds Her Parrot
The muse of the celestial musicians the gandharvas, the apsara is a paragon of beauty and art in motion. The stone sculpture that you see on this page depicts the finest of her kind. Formed in the best proportions of womanhood, she is clad in a silk dhoti that clings to her youthful musculature and shringar fit for the queens of paraloka. With superb precision and lifelike detail, the medium has been sculpted to resemble fabric layered closely over skin.

The beauteous apsara stands under a shoot that curves barely above the bun on her head. The organic impressions on the same have been carved with considerable skill and attention to detail. An adorable parrot is perched on her delicate wrist, which she feeds with utmost care from a hand-carved bowl. The beauty of the apsara is not only in form and face and figure, but in the being of her body and its language. The Furtive Princess
She has scarcely attained to womanhood. She runs around on the grounds of the palace of her father the King, mischievously keeping her handmaidens on tenterhooks in their never-ending search for her. She is bursting forth with life and fecundity, the beauty of her fulsome youth unbeknownst to her yet. In this oil painting, she is captured in a moment of stillness.

Something has caught the little princess by surprise. In one of the sombre corners of her home, she stands stock still and overhears her father discuss possible liaisons through her marriage. In her shyness, she draws her sheer dupatta over her bosom clad in a brick-coloured choli. Note the dilemma in her body language - the stance of her torso is as if to rush on in her playfulness, but she turns back a little, her head leaning in the direction of her father’s voice as he decides her future.

The fullness of her youth is set off by the ample gold and jewels on her person. A faint blush rises from the high of her cheeks to the roots of her black curls. Her heaving breasts are almost bursting through the silk of her choli. Her gaze is resting on a nearby lamp - an eerie glisten characterises those large, kohl-rimmed eyes.

Then there is silhouette. This one cuts a regal one, given the volume of its flowing skirt and the understated fit of the matching gold choli. The choli is embroidered with a world of flower-shaped booties - note the luxuriant panel across the neckline and sleeves - that add to the bridal appeal of this number. Finally, the most statement-making aspect of this lehenga is the peach-coloured dupatta. Its silken texture adds to the silhouette. With matching brocade sewn on to the edges and crystals woven into the fabric, it is just the image of bridal glamour.

Crossing the River
Navrang has shown a lovely plethora of tints to depict the scene of the battle of Thanesar which is taken from the Akbarnama. It is a historic Persian miniature that is festooned with real gold, increasing its worth and value. This painting encapsulates many men and many war animals however it highlights one young geezer who seems to be the commander of the battalions as they cross the river. He wears a beige jama and a green tassel like waist band that tightens around his body. This porcelain complexioned man with deep lines etched over his face wears a grey feathered turban as he carries a long spear in his hand and rides a decorated elephant who is emblazoned with gorgeous ornamented balls around its neck and a saddle cloth that hangs over its back. It is also enhanced with a pink tinted feather that falls over its head band.

The high blue river tides picture many soldiers who are either swimming, are in the cavalry or are mounted on elephants. All the geezers wear vibrant jamas and turbans as they take control of their exotically imprinted and designed war animals, holding their swords and spears as they look at their commander for help. They carry flags, shields and floral sheathed armaments as they struggle against the tides. The background shows amazingly contrasted green and beige fort like buildings and minaret that protrude from them as they peak from the lush green trees which stand on the grassy green riverbed.

To add further charm to this awestriking piece the artist encloses it in a golden and peach rectangular floral frame which is blessed with jade blue pistils and eye-catching motifs. This painting is the perfect match for those who love ancient Mughal history as it not only enhances their old cultural knowledge but turns out to be a great and precious ornament for their house hence even decorating up their soul.

Salmon Sari from Lucknow with Embroidered Flowers
Chiffon is the fabric of choice of the modern Indian woman. Its inimitable drape and paper-soft texture make it a staple feature of pop films and music videos. The chiffon saree that you see on this page is a transparent solid-coloured number. The colour is a delicate flush of gold mixed with peach, a great one for the bride’s sister or the bride herself on the occasion of those irreplaceably personal post-wedding dates.

The endpiece is the most glamorous aspect of this saree. It is densely embroidered in quintessential Lucknavi style with miniscule flowers in pale green and yellow, punctuated by extensive snatches of vine here and there. Matching embroidery is to be found along the thin border and more of those flowers across the field of the saree. This chiffon number is best teamed with the sleekest of your mother’s hand-me-downs.
