An ornament with an astrological connection to the mind and body

Rings have always held tremendous ornamental value in Hindu traditions. The most common purpose for them in the Indian culture is for ritualistic purposes for married women. However, finger rings are also adorned for other purposes such as meditation, protection and as a spiritual ornament as well. Furthermore, in Indian culture, gemstone rings have astrological relevance, and widely known stones such as diamonds, sapphires, and pearls can be worn on a specific finger, weighing a specific amount, and set in a specific metal to be worn on a specific day. Each stone is said to have meaning and healing properties. The popular metal of choice when it comes to rings is sterling silver because it is known to be a good conductor and aids the process of absorption of polar energies into the body, thus acting as an instrument of rejuvenation for the body’s internal systems.

Importance of the ring finger in Hindu culture

In Hinduism, the ring finger, or ‘Anamika’, is very important. Its legend is associated with Brahma and Shiva. Anamika means "that which has no name" or "that which should not be mentioned."

According to the legends, Brahma, who was overjoyed with his creation, overlooked the pain endured by living beings. His arrogance grew to the point where a fifth head emerged on him. Shiva, who could not stand Brahma's arrogance and pride, snatched the fifth head from him. He plucked Brahma's fifth head with his thumb and Anamika's finger (ring finger). The finger had incurred sin because it was used to extract the head. Thus, in Hinduism, all auspicious activities are performed with the ring finger in the atonement for the sin of killing Brahma.

When it comes to Chakras, the ring finger is attributed to the earth element and the deep liver meridian. It represents creative thinking and imagination, and powerful ring finger energy is said to provide stamina and confidence. The ring finger is also linked to the Muladhara Chakra (root), the energy center associated with the pelvic floor, as well as sentiments of security and protection.

Thus, the ring finger is used in many Hindu rituals such as the Shradh rituals, Naivedya in Panchopachara puja and the offerings of water and apbootathmakam during religious ceremonies. It is also used to adorn auspicious rings due to its spiritual significance. Deity rings are very common in the Hindu tradition. These rings are worn to invite the deity’s grace upon the wearer. For instance, Mahalaxmi rings are representative of wealth, Hanuman rings are representative of his blessings and so on.
