Tiredness- Music is a great source of relief and acts as a stress-buster. The physical and mental fatigue which results from following the daily grind of routine can sap one’s energy. There exists a feeling of excruciating tiredness. The feeling of utter exhaustion is relieved by the natural notes of the raga ‘Bhoopali’. ‘Bhoop’ is a pentatonic raga which gives importance to the consonance between the gandhar (ga) and dhaivat (dha). Listening to the strains of the raga ‘Bhoopali’ after a hard day of ceaseless unremitting work one feels as if it removes tiredness. It is said that most ragas convey what they do because of their associations. One associates the rega ‘Megh’ with the rainy season. Summer on th Indian sub-continent is unbearably hot. The red hot sun litrally turns the earth into a veritable furnace. With the onset of monsoon rains, one feels the fresh fragrance of the earth and the rains act as a life-giving force. There is greenery all around which is reflected in the raga ‘Megh’ played on the CD provides the feeling which removes tiredness.
Restfulness : The pain and the anxiety which is a direct consequence of the struggle for survival is reflected through the komal notes of the raga ‘Gunakali’. The komal ‘re’ and ‘dha’ mirror this feeling. Pandit Tarun Bhattacharya, one of the most accomplished Santoor-players of the country plays a solo piece in this raga. Restfulness pervades the rendition of the raga ‘Gunakali’. This pentatonic raga has a combination of ‘shuddha’ and ‘komal’ notes. The consonance between the note ‘komal re and ‘komal dhaivat’ transmits a feeling of restfulness. There is the note ‘pancham’ or ‘pa’ which is like a solid pole in our musical scale. It is a permanent and reliable resting point for the musician on the one hand and it gives enormous strength and a sense of assurance to the listener too.
Pt. Tarun Bhattacharya is the most well known Santoor players of his generation. He has trained under Sitar maestro Pt. Ravi Shankar for the past decade. Tarun Bhattacharya was born in a musical family in Calcutta. His father, Robi Bhattacharya, plays Sitar and Santoor. His mother also plays Santoor. Growing up in such a musical family, Tarun first started learning Tabla. Later he switched to Santoor. His initial training came from his father and Pandit Dulal Roy. Later he started learning from Sitar maestro Pt. Ravi Shankar.
Tarun Bhattacharya has become one of the most saught after concert musicians. He has also recorded several albums. He has made several changes to Santoor which have enhanced its tonal quality and increased its range, introducing glides and slides which emulate the blending of notes characteristically associated with more established instruments like Sitar.
Tarun Bhattacharya has collaborated with several artists, like Vishwa Mohan Bhatt and Pt. Ronu Majumdar. He has also scored music for a couple of TV serials along with Pt. Ronu Majumdar.

The fragrances inhaled through the fine hair lining the nose, enter the section of the brain called the limbic system. The limbic system controls our moods, emotions, memory and learning. When the brain reacts to the positive power of the aroma, it induces emotional well-being and brings back pleasant memories. In turn, this encourages relaxation and energisation.
Fragrances stimulate the power of affection. The odors inhaled have a corresponding effect on our feelings and emotions. When one loses the sense of smell, it could affect a person’s well-being and trigger anxiety and depression.
Marguerite Maury in the ‘Guide to Aroma therapy’ states,
“Essential oils are natural rejuvenating agents which facilitate the elimination of waste matter and dead cells and promote the regeneration of new and healthy cells”.
Essential oils possess therapeutic properties and are extracted from plants, flowers, roots and seeds. These oils are not the same as fragrances oils; instead essential oils form the essence of a plant. The fragrances of these oils bring about healing and if used appropriately, enable both psychological and physical benefits.
Each essential oils comes from a specific plant that vibrates an aromatic energy. The essential oils have a powerful effect on our being, through the sense of smell.
Lavender, found in the Mediterranean region, is one of the favored essential oils. Sweet orange oil, another favorite, is good for emotional well-being. The fragrance emanating from this oil provides emotional balance and a positive state of mind.
It is important to ensure that essential oils are natural and pure. Further, these oils evaporate quickly. Inhalation of these chemicals directly or by steam inhalation, works wonders to our emotional health. The inhalation of these oils combines synergistic chemicals, which are vital triggers to the brain. These triggers have a profound effect on our emotions.
Some of the essential oils also act as natural repellents and pesticides. They are also used in making homemade lotions, shampoos, perfumes soaps, toners, gels and other natural products.
Some essential oils have to be inhaled. Their aroma or scent, when inhaled promotes healing by stimulating the brain to induce a reaction.
