About the Artist

Renowned Santoor maestro Satish Vyas, senior most disciple of Santoor Legend Pandit Shiv kumar Sharma, continues to build an outstanding reputation as a soloist on the Santoor (hammered dulcimer). Born into a musician’s family’ is the son of legendary vocalist Late Pandit C R Vyas. After initial training in vocal music from his father, Satish was fortunate to be accepted as a disciple by Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma in 1975.

Satish Vyas has been a regular concert artist for the last more than 20 years or so, performing and recording all over India and other parts of the world, more extensively in the USA, UK & Europe , Japan and Australia. In 1997, he was the only non-western instrumentalist invited to perform in venice, Italy at the “Mostra Mozart festival”, organized by the prestigious European Mozart foundation. Vyas had also manifested his versatility by performing as a “guest musician” with Jazz/ world Music Fusion Group, “Silk” accompanying the renowned vocalist Shanker Mahadevan, the precussion Maestro shivamani, well known composer/pianist/keyboard artist Louis Banks and karl Peters(Bass Guitar) at a Barbican centre concert in London a few years ago. He also had the privilege of performing at the world famous Edinburgh Festival in Scotland.

Before taking the decision to make music his profession, Satish Vyas had completed his education with Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Science & MBA, and even begun to establish a career in the business world. The background is no doubt of use to him in his work as a major and one of the most successful organizers of classical music festivals in India, and indeed as Artistic Director of Navras records in India.

Satish Vyas has a number of recordings to his credit with Labels such as UK-based Navras Records, Music today, Times Music, BMG Crescendo and Sony Music.

The government of India honoured Satish Vyas with Padmashri in 2003.

About the CD

Raag Megh:
Megh means cloud and the Raag Megh is associated with the monsoon (rainy season). It is a pentatonic scale (which it shares with Raag Madhmad Sarang) and the notes are as follows:
Sa Re Ma Pa Ni which means the second and fourth note is natural and the seventh note is flat whereas the third and sixth note are omitted.

Raag Miyan ki Malhar:
Miyan ki malhar is the most popular raag of the rainy season which is believed to have created by Miyan Tansen, the Emperor Akbar’s foremost and favourite court musician. It embodies something of the awesome power of monsoon as well as the romantic longing of Lovers separated by the rains.

The Scale of Miyan ki Malhar is as follow:
Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Dha Ni Ni

The scale shows that both Nishads (komal and shudh) i.e flat and natural seventh note are used in the raag. The second, fourth ansd sixth notes are natural where as third note is flat, the most distinctive movements are the vakra (crooked) descent Ga Ma Re Sa and the ascent ma Pa Ni Dha Ni Sa.

Thank you very much for the Shri Yantra with Navaratna which has arrived here safely. I noticed that you seem to have had some difficulty in posting it so thank you...Posting anything these days is difficult because the ordinary postal services are either closed or functioning weakly.   I wish the best to Exotic India which is an excellent company...
