Hailing from a traditional family of musicians of Benaras, Rajan and Sajan Mishra are perhaps the most acclaimed stars of their generation. Trained primarily by their father Hanuman Mishra and uncle Gopal Mishra (the famous sarangi wizard), the brothers have had the added fortune of learning from the noted master, Bade Ramdasji of Benarasi. They have a wide repertoire of ragas and old compositions of khayal, tarana, tappa and bhajan, which in conjunction with their tuneful voices breathtaking technical virtuosity, sound learning, and an attractive style of presentation, have endeared them to lay audiences and cognoscenti alike. It is not always easy for two artistes with talent to reconcile to singing in jugalbandi where each partner has to accommodate and respect the other, often at the cost of individual initiative. Rajan and Sajan, however have developed a homogeneous blend of their voices sometimes contrasting one with the other, sometimes merging into one seamless whole. Their devotion to music apart, Rajan and Sajan are also sophisticated men of their times with a systematic University education. Rajan Mishra is a graduate from the Benaras Hindu University. They have performed widely in India and abroad and have been the recipients of many awards and honours.
