About the CDs

Spanning across almost every continent and over a millennium the Sufi movement has influenced various cultures and ways of life. Besides being a strong philosophical and spiritual guide for its followers the discipline has also gone on to influence art through way of dance poetry and perhaps most notably music. Not far behind is the fine art of Sufi whirling which leaves participants and viewers alike mesmerized. A dynamic form of meditation practiced by the Dervishes it is said that the whirling signifies the leaving behind of the ego and the uniting of the mind body and soul with a divine power.

Sufi music has had many talented exponents who have gone on to spread the beauty of this art form across the world through popular culture. The most popular form of Sufi music is the Qawwali which originated in Persia in the eighth century. In this form of expression too the performer and the listener similar to Sufi whirling feel transported to another state of being. This form in singing is almost always linked to the spiritual and artistic aspects of life. Sufi music follows a specific psychological process which starts off with the singing of the song quite similarly to any other forms of musical expression. After this the words are repeatedly sung over and over again with different variations which allow listeners to interpret the words in a different light. After a while however even these words cease to have any meaning and it provides the ideal setting for the listener or participant to move to a state of spiritual enlightenment. The lyrics are normally a healthy mix of Punjabi and Urdu and traditionally this art is passed down in families from generation in generation.

To take Sufi Music from is inherently classical origins and to tune it into something that even contemporary society enjoys and appreciations has been a long journey in itself. The pioneer of this journey was the maestro of Sufi music. Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. Throughout the years the efforts of talents like Rahat Fateh Ali Khan & Kailash Kher have made it possible for today’s generations to appreciate and enjoy the nuances of this fine art. Though traditionally Sufi music has always been an ode to the almighty it is also used in film soundtracks and on pop albums in its new avatar. In fact even non classical singers have taken to performing Sufi Style songs. Some of the biggest hits from the last few years have belonged these songs on movie soundtracks. Radio channels across the country have also taken to this genre and Hindi Cinema is also cashing in on its success by including these songs on movie soundtracks. Radio channels across the country the country have also taken to this genre which is evident by the airplay that Sufi music enjoys. But its proponents have managed to do so without taking away from the purity of the art form which is perhaps where its charm lies. A pleasurable listen for anyone who enjoys music Sufi Style music is a class apart.
