Ustad Rashid Khan
Rampur Sahaswan Gharana’s most prolific and popular vocalist Ustad Rashid Khan is currently the most sought after singer on the classical music stage. His steady powerful voice and astonishing lung power have enthroned him in the hearts of even the casual listeners of classical music. He has been credited with formulating his own style slow elaboration in vilambit khayals with expertise in the use of sargams sargam taankari and emphasis on emotional overtones in his renditions. It has brought a touch of spontaneity and modernity to his style and made Hindustani classical music easily intelligible and hence closer to the masses.

Ustad Rashid Khan was born on 1st July 1966 in Badayun Uttar Pradesh he belongs to the family of the great Ustad Inayat Hussain Khan who is recognized as the pioneer of the Rampur Sahaswan gaharana. His music education began under his uncle Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan another luminary of the gharana and later received rigorous training from the late Ustad Nissar Hussain Khan (1909 to 1993) at the Sangeet Research Academy at Calcutta Ustad Nissar Hussain khan was hailed in his time as the master of the tarana a musical form using mnemonic syllables, which Rashid mastered and now renders with this own style.

Ustad Rashid Khan is a recipient of many awards and titles the most prominent among them being the padmashree and Sangeet Natak Academy award.

The NCPA Archives
Described as the Treasure trove of Indian classical music the NCPA archives has over 5000 hours of music of the who’s who of classical music both in the Hindustani and Carnatic Styles. Maintained for over 4 decades in the most ideal conditions of temperature and humidity and on the best recording formats the NCPA Archives preserves and protects India’s rich musical heritage.

According to the Artists themselves the work recorded on the Archives features some of their best works recorded at the prime of their careers. This wonderful ‘khazana’ is being presented to the music loving public for the first time.
