Radha and Krishna are the role models for love, romance and sexuality in nearly all Indian classical poetry and miniature. The indigenous Pahari culture produced exuberant vibrantly coloured illustrations of myth and literature.

The lovelorn protagonists, Krishna and Radha, stand amidst the lush greens of Brindavan. Their graceful figures, with their dignified poise and naturalness in expression provide a glow to the scene. The royally bedecked Krishna seems suddenly distracted while playing his flute. He turns back his head to look at his beloved who is holding a lotus to present him. Oblivious to their interaction, the cowherd's cow lovingly licks at Krishna's feet. The artist has painted haloes behind the duo's heads, telling the viewers that they are no ordinary mortals.

If the subject of the painting is interesting, the background just adds to it. A variegated vegetation lines the horizon. The sky consists of a colourful palette. The yellow sky ascends to the orange evening sky, which suddenly turns blue with curling clouds in motion. The foreground has an attractive lotus pond with flowers, buds and leaves dotting it. A few flowering plants add to its attraction.
