Seemingly opposite yet eternally together, Shiva and Shakti in Hindu traditions are the supreme male and female principles, whose divine balance is at the root of creation, represented best by the awe-inspiring image of Ardhanarishvara. In this Rajput miniature-style watercolor painting, the Adi-Shakti and Adi deva (primordial Goddess and God) appear against a soft blue-hued backdrop, in a four-armed form.

Shiva is adorned with serpents, a garland of skulls, and a white dhoti and Parvati is wearing a red veil, green blouse, and yellow lehenga- the traditional Rajasthani attire. They share a tiger-hide asana and a red bolster which adds regalia to the imagery. The clouds in the sky and the beautiful blue background symbolize akasha- the eternal horizon, which is equivalent to the unbounded and eternal powers of Ardhanarishvara.
